About the Film
Unconditional centers the lived experiences of Chantal, Charlie, and L as they navigate homelessness in Denver and move toward greater stability on their own terms. Through their stories, the film offers an intimate look at how access to direct cash reshapes daily decision-making, relationships, and long-term possibilities.
Alongside participant stories, Unconditional includes perspectives from Denver Basic Income Project staff and Denver Councilwoman Shontel M. Lewis, grounding these experiences within the broader systems that shape housing, economic mobility, and public policy in Denver.
Produced in partnership with the Denver Voice and Kayla Ferguson, this film is part of DBIP’s ongoing commitment to participant-led storytelling and narrative change.
Why This Film Exists
Over the course of the pilot, the Denver Basic Income Project distributed $10.8 million in direct cash to more than 800 Denver residents experiencing homelessness . That investment created immediate shifts in how people were able to move through their lives, while also generating deeper insight into what stability looks like when people have access to flexible resources.
Unconditional documents a portion of that experience. It captures the complexity of navigating housing, income, and personal goals in a system that often leaves little room for choice. It also reflects the relationships built between participants and the project, and the ways those relationships continue to shape what comes next.
This film is one part of a larger body of work that includes research, participant engagement, and program design—all of which are informing the next phase of DBIP.
What Comes Next
DBIP is currently in a transition period focused on designing the next iteration of the program with intention and care. This work includes building structures that integrate participant leadership into decision-making, strengthening operational systems, and developing a long-term funding strategy that supports sustainability without compromising core values.
The April 23 screening marks a moment to gather, reflect, and invest in that next phase.
